The Hallstatt Altar of Mary in the southern area of the double choir of the late Gothic Catholic parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Hallstatt in the Salzkammergut in Upper Austria is a pentaptych, a walking altar with a main shrine, two movable outer and two movable inner wings, which allow an alternation between three different sides. The shrine is decorated with sculptures, the inner wings are decorated with reliefs on the front and back, and there are painting panels on both sides of the outer wings. The sculptures and reliefs are extensively gilded. The altar, which is dedicated to the Mother of God, was created around 1510–20 in the workshop of Leonhard Astl and is one of the most important and elaborate late Gothic winged altars in Upper Austria.

The current sacred building dates from 1859 to 1863 and replaced the house of prayer from 1785. The church is a parish church of the Evangelical Church A.B. in Austria and belongs to the Evangelical Superintendence of Upper Austria. The church is also known as Christ Church. The Hirlatzhöhle is a cave in the Dachstein massif in the municipality of Hallstatt in the Upper Austrian part of the Salzkammergut. The total length of the cave known to date is over 115 km. It is therefore the third longest cave in Austria and, at 1559 m deep, the second deepest cave in Austria. The deepest point is at 443 m above sea level and therefore 65 m below the water level of the nearby Hallstättersee. It is the 21nd longest cave system in the world.
