A pioneer in several areas of the economy of Brazil, one of his greatest achievements was to start the construction of the Mauá Railroad, the first railroad in Brazil, in 1852.

He was notable for his service in the Pikysyry campaign, having a previous origin as a notable citizen from Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. Commanding the Cavalry Brigade of the II Corps, he died of wounds during the Battle of Avay and died two days after the battle.
