The church of St. Walburga in Werl is a Gothic hall building from the 14th century with a 62-metre-high late Romanesque tower with a baroque Welsch dome. It is built of local green sandstone. The church was elevated to a provost's church by Pope Leo XIII in 1892. The parish belongs to the Archdiocese of Paderborn. The parish was one of the oldest in the Decanese of Soest in the Archdiocese of Cologne, to which it used to belong.

4. Alte Wallfahrtskirche

A pilgrimage to a statue of Mary in Werl, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, caused the building of pilgrimage churches there. The first one, completed in 1662, was replaced by a Baroque building completed in 1789, which later became known as the Alte Wallfahrtskirche. When it became too small, an adjacent Wallfahrtsbasilika was built, dedicated to the Visitation. It was declared a Basilica minor in 1953.
