Kaminaljuyu is a Pre-Columbian site of the Maya civilization located in Guatemala City. Primarily occupied from 1500 BC to 1200 AD, it has been described as one of the greatest archaeological sites in the New World—although the extant remains are distinctly unimpressive. Debate continues about its size, integration, and role in the surrounding Valley of Guatemala and the Southern Maya area.

2. Iglesia Cerrito del Carmen

Iglesia Cerrito del Carmen

The Cerrito del Carmen is a Catholic hermitage and cultural site located at the top of Cerro del Carmen, in the Historic Center of Guatemala City, whose construction dates back to the seventeenth century, at least one hundred years before the founding of the city. It is consecrated to the Virgen del Carmen and has been declared cultural heritage of the nation and a Marian sanctuary. The history of Cerrito del Carmen is intimately linked to that of the founding of the Guatemalan capital and has been rebuilt after the earthquakes of 1917 and 1976.

The old Church of Santo Domingo in Guatemala City — today the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary — is a Catholic temple in the neoclassical seismic style that is located in the Historic Center of Guatemala City. It was built at the end of the eighteenth century and has been rebuilt twice: after the earthquakes of 1917-18 and after the earthquake of 1976.
