De Groot or the Mill of Piet is a round stone windmill in the Dutch city of Alkmaar. The mill was built as a shore mill on the Clarissenbolwerk near the former Kennemerpoort and still dominates the cityscape there.
2. Vismarkt
The fish market in Alkmaar is a national monument that consists of several stone galleries and covered fish banks. In the first half of the 19th century, the building served as a trading office and fish stall. The fish was stored in the galleries and displayed on the stone fish benches for the market.
3. Kapelkerk
The Kapelkerk is a medieval church in the old town of Alkmaar, on the river Laat. Originally, the Catholic St. John's Chapel stood on this site, hence the name "Chapel Church". The church is used by the Dutch Reformed Churches in Alkmaar for weekly worship services. In February 2016, this church congregation bought this church from the Protestant Church of the Netherlands, which guarantees its continued existence as a church building. In January 2019, the church was transferred to the Chapel Church Foundation.
4. Strijkmolen D
Strijkmolen D is an oak octagonal ironing mill built between 1627 and 1630. The mill is a so-called ground sailer. Ironing mills do not drain polders, but grind the water from one basin to the other. There have been a total of 14 ironing mills, 6 at the Molenkade in Oudorp, 4 behind Oudorp and 4 at Rustenburg. Strijkmolen D is one of the four remaining mills on the Molenkade and pumped the water from various polders to the Schermerboezem. In 1941 the ironing mills lost their function because the Raaksmaatsboezem was merged with the Schermerboezem.
5. Sluismolen
The Sluismolen is a polder mill built in 1575 with an oak octagon on a low base. The mill is located near the Koedijkervlotbrug along the Noordhollandsch Kanaal in the village of Koedijk, although the postal address is Alkmaar. The mill is, like so many North Holland polder mills, an inland porter. Until 1926, the mill drained the Sluispolder exclusively by wind power. In that year, an electric auxiliary drive was installed and hardly any grinding was done on the wind. In 1944 the Sluismolen was made operational again due to problems with the electricity supply. Unreliable rods were the reason for the mill to be shut down after a short time. In 1948 the paddle wheel was replaced by an electrically driven auger.
6. De Viaan
De Viaan is a polder mill built in 1579 with an oak octagon on a low base. The mill is a so-called ground sailer. The mill is located on the outskirts of Alkmaar, on the Havinghastraat. Together with an electric pumping station, it currently drains a 464-hectare part of the De Bergermeer polder. De Viaan's flight is Old Dutch. The mill was fitted with an auger in 1876. Unlike many other polder mills of this size, De Viaan has never been inhabited; Next to the mill is the miller's house.
7. De Eendracht
De Eendracht is a polder mill built in 1771 in the Dutch city of Alkmaar. It is a round stone mill of the groundsailer type with an Old Dutch sail. De Eendracht is the last remaining stone polder mill in North Holland. He drained the polder until 1931; After that, this task was taken over by the electric pumping station next to the mill.
8. Schermerhek
All that remains of the Schermerpoort is the Schermerhek, the two natural stone pillars with sandstone decorations. The Schermerpoort was a city gate in the Dutch city of Alkmaar. The remains are the only remnants of the seven city gates that Alkmaar has had. The pillars stood in front of the actual gate. On 16 December 1969 they were registered in the Register of Monuments as a national monument.
9. Muziekvereniging Excelsior
The former Volksbadhuis of the Dutch city of Alkmaar is a municipal monument in the center of the city. The building, opened in 1892, was the first municipal bathhouse in Alkmaar. At the same time as the bathhouse, villas were also built in the Emmakwartier that had their own bathroom. To take a bath in the bathhouse you had to pay ƒ 0.50.
