The first laying of 30 stumbling stones took place on 19 April 2012 in Bad Neuenahr. In April 2013, a further 12 stumbling stones were laid in the districts of Bad Neuenahr and Heimersheim. On November 12, 2014, Gunter Demnig laid 20 more small brass memorials in the Ahrweiler district, and for the first time a placeholder stone for a surviving relative was also laid. The action in the city came to a provisional conclusion in the spring of 2015 with 10 more stumbling stones. These stones were laid without Gunter Demnig in the Ahrweiler district. Since the artist was unable to use all 30 stones planned for Ahrweiler in November 2014, he allowed the city to install the remaining memorial stones itself.
