The Monument to Francesco Datini is one of the symbols of Prato and is located in Piazza del Comune, the work of the Ferrara sculptor Antonio Garella. Made of white Carrara marble, it is dedicated to the merchant of Prato, Francesco Datini, and depicts the character in the act of giving his will to the poor, who were the recipients of his immense wealth through the establishment of the Ospedale del Ceppo. The pedestal features bronze bas-reliefs on the life of the famous merchant. The work has been restored to its former glory after the restoration completed in 2010. The original cast of the sculpture was kept at the Convitto Cicognini where it was accidentally destroyed in 2015. Every August 17, the city pays homage to the merchant and patron by placing a laurel wreath at the base of the sculpture.
