The theater was created at the initiative of a team of actors, recent graduates of the "Shchukin" Theater School in Moscow, led by Petru Vutcărău. Eugène Ionesco personally gave his consent for the new theater to bear his name, this being the first trophy obtained by the descendants of the Vakhtangovian school. The well-known Bessarabian director and actor Petru Vutcărău was the first director and artistic director of the theater, currently being the director of the theater.
