The building dates from 1657 and was used for preparing and selling fish. In 1988 the fish hall was moved back to its original and current location after it had been moved to the Lieve Vrouwenkerhof from 1856.

It is one of the most eye-catching monuments in town and the third highest church tower in the Netherlands. The nickname of the tower is Lange Jan. The church that belonged to the tower was destroyed by a gunpowder explosion in the 18th century.
