Sight 4: Synagóga

The synagogue in Banská Štiavnica was built in 1893. It is located at Novozámocká 5 in Banská Štiavnica. The synagogue itself consists of a vestibule and a main hall. The building was probably created in the Gothic period and later rebuilt in the Renaissance style, and only in the 19th century it began to be used for sacral purposes after modification. The reconstruction itself was financed by the local Jewish community. In 1941, sacral activities in this building were suspended and from the 50s of the 20th century there was a tinsmith's workshop and later a driving school. At present, it belongs to the city reserve of Banská Štiavnica and is also inscribed on the UNESCO list as well as on the List of National Cultural Monuments.

Banská Štiavnica

Banská Štiavnica is a town in central Slovakia, in the middle of an immense caldera created by the collapse of an ancient volcano. For its size, the caldera is known as the Štiavnica Mountains. Banská Štiavnica has a population of more than 10,000. It is a completely preserved medieval town. Because of their historical value, the town and its surroundings were proclaimed by the UNESCO to be a World Heritage Site on December 11, 1993.
