In 1474, the Hospital Order of the Holy Spirit built a hospital and inn here on a donation basis "in honour of God and the Holy Spirit and the patrons St. George and Margaret". It was administered by two guest masters, who checked the need and encouraged those in need who were able to work to cooperate. The operating costs were covered by public collections and pious foundations.
