It is part of the pastoral zone I, deanery of Simplon. The church was elevated to a parish in 1925 and in 1958, the centenary of the apparition of the Virgin to Bernadette, to the rank of minor Roman basilica by Cardinal Montini, later Pope Paul VI. The building was erected between 1897 and 1902 to a design by the architect Alfredo Campanini (1873-1926), known for his Art Nouveau and eclectic Milanese architecture.
